Tirzepatide
What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is another medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. It belongs to a class of drugs called dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists.
GLP-1 Receptor Agonist:
Like semaglutide, tirzepatide activates the GLP-1 receptors. GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the gut that stimulates insulin secretion from the pancreas and reduces glucagon secretion. This helps to lower blood sugar levels after meals and decrease fasting blood sugar levels.
How does Tirzepatide work?
GIP Receptor Agonist Activity:
Tirzepatide also activates the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors. GIP is another hormone produced in the gut that stimulates insulin secretion in response to food intake. By activating GIP receptors, tirzepatide further enhances insulin secretion, especially in response to meals.
Slowing of Gastric Emptying:
Tirzepatide, similar to GLP-1 receptor agonists, can slow down the emptying of the stomach contents into the small intestine. This delay in gastric emptying helps to reduce postprandial (after-meal) blood sugar spikes.
Appetite Suppression:
Tirzepatide has been shown to have an effect on reducing appetite and promoting satiety, similar to GLP-1 receptor agonists. This can lead to decreased food intake and potentially aid in weight loss.
